It was strange walking around Downtown with a DSLR in my hand again, kind of like going back to where I started. When I first starting photographing more obsessively I’d bring my 20d to work and run around downtown for a couple hours once I punched out. I ended up learning the Downtown light and angles pretty well but after time it became a bit challenging to shoot there, a feeling that quickly came back today.
Shooting digital has been interesting, kind of like taking a vacation. Looking at the results I kind of feel like I’m looking alien images. They don’t seem like my type of photographs, but I kind of like it. I like being out there again, just running around and composing photographs. Once this mini project is over I’ll go back to film and continue working on my long term projects. I think I’ll be sharper after these seven days and hell, maybe I’ll end up with a handful of decent photographs…
Tomorrow I’ll spend the day on Sunset Blvd.

I chose to stick around the hood for the first day of this project. My first destination was the house where the effigy of Sarah Palin was displayed. I did not make a photograph. While I firmly believe in freedom of expression and will defend it rigorously, I believe this stunt is reprehensible, especially given the tension surrounding this election.
After that I made my way down Fairfax Ave., and then to Melrose where I spent the afternoon photographing. I felt good keeping things simple. The objective of this project is to collect photographs that represent not only the days leading up to the election, but also a visual diary of how I remember these areas that I’ve strolled around so often in the last four years. The images that were mundane a year ago, now have taken on a new life with the knowledge that I’ll be leaving in three weeks. I’m also in the midst of a new color film project which will interweave with this digital project psychologically, but not aesthetically.
That’s the area I covered. The slideshow contains 61 photographs in the order I shot them, with a bit of editing of course. I decided not to mess with the sequencing right now. The show is set to Trigger Hippie by Morcheba. If that’s not your cup of tea, don’t click the play button and browse at your leisure or skip it…
