Settling in Greenpoint

I think this is probably how it works for many New York transplants.  You bounce around sublets for a few months until you land in an abandoned apartment that somehow has become vacant in the ebb and flow of NYC apartment upgrading.  I have this room for three months and will likely have the option of signing a lease.  Not really sure if I’ll do it at this point.  Better to wait and see I figure.

But two and half months gives me time to work. I’m thinking I’ll probably develop my film and start the arduous task of editing.  Stare at the negatives enough times and after a certain point your eyes instantly gravitate to a few images.  Somewhere in that pile of film there are few rolls from Greenpoint, but for now, the best I can really show are iPhone photographs.  I don’t mind though.  I like mobile, instant photography.  It’s kind of like the new polaroid I feel, and the quality will only improve over time.  I don’t really understand how any serious photographer isn’t training themselves to think this way.  The future is mobile, instant and precise.  Certainly all photojournalists of the future will be uploading daily through mobile devices, and I’m certain all digital cameras in the near future will have this option.  The next wave will be digital point and shoot cameras with mobile capabilities.  This will be a paradigm changer, at least for photojournalists and web savvy documentary people.  The hardened fine art people will certainly thumb their nose at it and quip, ‘my feeling is there are already too many photographs in the world.’

I’ve started to use the Tumblr/Twitter combination for my mobile activities.  Tumblr just feels like the perfect daily scrapbook platform with Twitter acting as the tip of broadcasting sword.  There’s so much noise about people freaking out about Twitter and what it means.  It’s just boring.  Stop commenting on the fucking tools and just figure out the best way you can use them to communicate your art, message, ideas or what have you.  If they’re not for you, then just ignore them and go back to watching TV.

Adrift in Brooklyn

I started my current project ‘Drift’ when I made the decision to raise anchor in Los Angeles and head east.  The intent was that it would be completed when I was no longer adrift and finally settled, be it in New York, or wherever circumstances would settle me.

I start a new job on Monday in Brooklyn, so it looks like I’ll be in New York for awhile longer, but I by no means feel settled yet.  I’m still subletting and with this job I’ll literally be starting at the bottom and be forced to work my way up, which is fine, but it doesn’t exactly put me on firm ground.  Only a fool would try to predict what may happen in this economy.  Things could still get dramatically worse.
