Chapter One: Friday, June 14, 2002

St. Paul, MN – Friday, June 14, 2002

Saw Lantana tonight.  My kind of movie.  It didn’t make any of the easy connections and involved multiple characters.  It was the first time I’ve been really impressed with a movie and a few weeks.  I’m very stoked about Thirteen Conversations About One Thing.  The reviews have been good and I know that I’ll gain some insight from it, especially about “Cosmo”.  I think that I might be able to start seriously writing the script in a few weeks.  I just need to get to a certain point and trust my intuition.

I read a good Q & A with John August on IMDB tonight.  A guy asked him how one makes time for writing while working a 9-5 job.  His answers were similar to several things that I always think about and struggle with, for instance not watching TV.  At one time he wrote the word NO on the TV to prevent himself from watching it.  I know that I just need to write and write all the time.  Maybe I’ll start by setting aside a half hour a day.  Wherever I am I need to write scenes or dialogues.  I need to get the ball rolling instead of sitting here stagnant.

When I move I think that I’m just going to settle for basic cable and not get premium channels.  It’s a sacrifice because I like the Discovery and Science channel but it’s something that I have to do if I want to become a writer.  I can’t give up my Internet connection though because that’s my lifeline.  So there’s goal number one for the move.  No cable.  Just the basics.  That should save me a few dollars as well.  I’m not sure what else I can do to save money but I need to find something else to cut out.  It would be golden if I could find a place where all utilities are paid.

Improv class went really well last week.
